AUSTRALIA Stocks fall in dull trading

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed easier as stocks fell across the board in lacklustre trade. Brokers said there was very little institutional activity with the end-of-quarter falling today, but increased option-related trade with the expiry of the September series. One broker said the local market was going nowhere and trading in a very narrow range, in the same fashion as New York. “It’s in the doldurms and a definitive bear market. It’s not getting excited about anything,” he said. At the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index had fallen 3.6 points to 1542.6. The gold marker slipped 23.4 points to 1602, the all industrials index 3.5 to 2554.1 and the all resources 3.5 also to 784.9. National turnover was 221.87 M shares worth sAustl46.36M — boosted by 131 M Petroz shares worth sAust4.4M being pushed through in special sales booked by broker Burdett, Buckeridge and Young. Falls led rises by more than three to two. Among industrials, Industrial Equity closed 3c up at 140 despite reporting a 75 per cent fall in June year profit. Bond Corp rose 10c to 215. Four cent rises took Pioneer Concrete to 299, Amatil to 874 and Mayne Nickless to 724. Closing , , , quotes Last Industrial Buy Sell sale ANI 206 207 207
