Beaten man collapsed

PA Tauranga A man, aged 25, who collapsed near the headquarters of a Tauranga motor-cycle gang had been severely beaten and set upon by a dog, the 'District Court at Tauranga was told. Before Judge Cullinane was Pual Henry Scott, aged 20, and Charlie Reihana Te Papa, aged 33, who both listed their address as the Filthy Few’s headquarters in Tauranga. Scott and Te Papa were jointly charged with as-

saulting Michael Vivian Waaka with intent to injure on September 9. Scott admitted the charge, but Te Papa entered a plea of not guilty and was remanded to November 22 for a defended hearing. Scott was convicted and remanded till October 18 for sentence. The police prosecutor, Sergeant Wayne McKinnon, said Mr Waaka was found staggering in Birch Avenue about 4.30 a.m. and collapsed in front of a police patrol.

“He had been severely beaten around the head and face and his body was covered in extensive dog bites,” Mr McKinnon said. Scott, not yet a patch member of the gang, told police Mr Waaka had been seen in an unauthorised area of the pad and tampering with motorcycles. Mr McKinnon said police had taken possession of a RottweilerDoberman dog and were seeking its destruction. Other complaints had been received about the dog.
