Speedy Cheval recovers from fitness troubles

By

JEFF SCOTT

Speedy Cheval shrugged off any fitness worries for Saturday’s Tegel Poultry Flying Stakes at Ashburton with a sound run for fourth in the main pacers’ heat at the Addington trials yesterday.

The Noodlum gelding, an all-the-way winner for his new connections on the first night of the New Brighton meeting earlier this month, missed the New Brighton Cup on the second night with a tyingup problem, but trainer Peter Ryder gave Speedy Cheval the all-clear for a start this week after yesterday’s performance. Starting from 50m behind in the C2-OC pace, Speedy Cheval was not unduly hurried to run the 2600 m post-to-post in 3:20, his last mile in 2:2.3 and his closing 800 m in 57.8. “I was very pleased with him. He felt pretty good, but it’s an awkward draw he’s got on Saturday, coming into the outside of the front row with the emergencies out,” said Ryder. Ryder, who drove the five-year-old in yesterday’s trial, will again drive Speedy Cheval in Saturday’s feature. The trial was won by another last-start Addington winner, Wood Chip (10m), which should go close to completing a double in the 3200 m Glad Products Pace at Ashburton.

The Transport Chip gelding finished best from the third line for trainer Robin Butt, in 3:26.4 for the 2600 m, beating the stronger finishing Mistabell by a nose. The leaders ran their last 800 m in 59.5. Rolls Hanover (50m), a race rival of Speedy Cheval on Saturday, ran on solidly from the back of thezbunchJtor -David-Butt yesterday* for third a length away, with Speedy Cheval doing his best work at the finish a further? length away. Bellam, which resumes in the 3200 m Grande Corporation N.Z., Ltd, Trot at Ashburton, again showed his readiness by taking out the C5-OC free-for-all yesterday in 3:26.8 for the 2600 m, the leaders running their last 800 m in 59.6. The Plat du Jour entire trailed Kylie’s Pride from the 1800 m yesterday and finished slightly better to win from a race rival on Saturday, Pitcher, which was even more impressive yesterday, dashing home late from the third line to

get within a head of the winner. Pitcher, which gives Bellam a 10m start on Saturday, was timed over his last 2400 m in 3:7.8 and his closing 800 m in 58.8 in the hands of Michael de Filippi. Cool Charm Girl, which resumes with the ace dray?... in. the„ Countdown Flying Mile at Ashburton, was parked throughout and won the Cl and faster mobile trial untroubled yesterday. The Smooth Fella mare, which returned a quiet 3:25.7 for the 2600 m, held out the Liquorland Sires’ Stakes Heat entrant, Highview Boy (now with Denis Nyhan) quite comfortably by a length, although neither was asked for a serious effort. Highview Boy, which was keen in the trail to the straight, was timed over his last 400 m in 30.1. The winner ran this section in 29.8. Swinging Billy, after moving up in the open from the 1200 m and lead-

ing at the 600 m, was untroubled to hold out Le Due in the Cl-C4 trot, the leaders quickening from the 800 m in 58.9, while Western Storm looked the pick of the maidens, reeling off a closing 800 m in front of 58 for trainer Robin Butt to beat Dominion Bitter (third line) and Hindu Beebee, which-waspafked. Kerryman, a Clever Innocence gelding from a half-sister to the dam of Morano Magic (1:58.6), and Zippy Jiffy, a Jiffy Boy colt from a third line descendant of Colwyn Bay (the dam of Cardigan Bay), took out the Two-Year-Old Parades over 2000 m. The former, prepared at Greenpark by Paul Hadfield, scored easily in 2:48.2, pacing his closing 400 m in 30 from Cosby, which ran on solidly from the third line. Zippy Jiffy, a member of Leicester Tatterson’s Rangiora stable, paced his opening 400 m from a stand in 34.2 to lead, and held out a strong finish

from the Paul Newtontrained Assisi, a big Vance Hanover filly, by a neck, in 2:45.6, the last 400 m in 30.1. Results: CO Pacers, mobile, 2600 m.— Vin Ray, J.
