Bolger blames racial tension on Government
Wellington reporter Race relations in New Zealand were seriously deteriorating for which the Government was at fault, said the Opposition yesterday, hitting back at the Prime Minister, Mr Lange’s, criticism of the previous National administration’s economic record. Mr Lange had told the Council of Foreign Relations in New York yesterday that his Government inherited an economy of “Third World propor-
tions.” However, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, said in Wellington that in 1984 New Zealand’s, economy was strong. He then attacked Labour’s race record. When National left office, Mr Bolger said, there was minimal racial tension. “In just four years Labour has crippled the export sector, pushed record numbers on the dole, trebled our overseas debt, and caused a serious deterioration of racial tensions,” Mr Bolger said.
