Cathedral alterations almost complete
Stonemasons at Christchurch Cathedral are reassembling the effigy of Bishop Harper, the firt Bishop of Christchurch, in the last stage of the restructuring of the Cathedral's chancel. Work on restructuring the chancel began in June and its completion will be celebrated at a service on Sunday at 7.30 p.m. at which the Bishop of Christchurch, • the Right Rev. Maurice Goodall, will officiate.
The chancel has been altered to allow more open-plan services in keeping with modern liturgical needs. The structural alterations have included the installation of an altar in the nave to bring the officiant closer to the congregation during services. The wooden chancel screen, choir seats and some flooring have been relocated. The Synod. . of the Diocese of Christchurch will begin tomorrow and
Sunday’s service will be attended by representatives of all parishes in the diocese. Bishop Goodall will address the synod on Friday evening. The Dean of Christchurch, the Very Rev. Dr David Coles, said one of the most interesting bills to be discussed at the Synod was a bill proposing to revise and amend the constitution of the Anglican Church to incorporate the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
