Champagne welcome for cup
PA Auckland The One Ton Cup arrived in New Zealand to a champagne welcome yesterday. The'skipper, Richard Dodson, and crew of nine of the New Zealand yacht Propaganda, won the international offshore trophy in a sevenrace series in San Francisco Bay last week. Dodson and his crew were met by officials from the team backers, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron,
with champagne. Propaganda’s navigator, John Newton, spent most of the morning becoming acquainted with his month-old daughter, Emma. When Newton left for America with the New Zea-land-Australia Direct ' Shipping Line team, she was only four days old. Dodson learned for the first time that his brother, Tom, had missed out on a medal sailing in the Soling
class at the summer Olympics in Pusan. “News of the Kiwi athletes was non-existent in the States,” he said. Propaganda’s co-owner, Tim Bailey, said the priority now would be to qualify for a three-boat team to defend the Admiral’s Cup at Cowes next year. The yacht and its teammate Fair Share are due back in Auckland by ship late in October.
