Public opinion
Sir,—The public have had enough of Government depart-ment-appointed boards of inquiry, special committees, etc. Many of these bodies are made
up of trendy intellectuals, selfstyled experts and extreme liberals. In the main, these people are unrealistic, arrogant and out of touch with the opinions of the majority of New Zealanders. One only needs to object to such things as the subtle pressure being brought to bear to change our country’s name from New Zealand to Aotearoa in order to be told “but you are only an ordinary person, you don’t know any better.” However, were a nation-wide poll to be taken on the subject, I suspect the result would be 80 per cent in favour of retaining New Zealand as the official name of the country. We ordinary people pay the wages of these persons through the taxation system, our opinions must be taken into account. — Yours, etc., D. E. OAKLEY. September 26, 1988.
