Lange offers N.Z. support
NZPA New York New Zealand would be prepared to support a United Nations initiated peace-keeping force in the troubled southern African state of Namibia, says the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. Speaking after a meeting with President Robert Mugabe, of Zimbabwe, Mr Lange said New Zealand had a tradition of participating in peace-keeping
around the world. “Come a (U.N.) resolution on Namibia, we would be in, I am sure of it,” he said. “We would be in because it would resolve, this awful, illegal, protracted struggle.” Mr Lange said Namibia would need to have the protection of the international community for the supervision of elections and New Zealand had the capacity, in con-
cert with other countries, to provide a positive strength for the period of transition. “That is something that appeals to me.” Mr Lange said Mr Mugabe had expressed his support for the 1990 Com-, monwealth Games in Auckland, which African States had threatened to boycott after the planned rebel New Zealand rugby tour of South Africa in 1986.
