Celebrating healthy food
Let’s have a party! For most of us the idea of a party means enjoyment, celebration, a time to meet with old friends and make new ones. A party means food and the sharing of food. The giving of food is a way of showing our pleasure in the company of friends and family. The National Heart Foundation’s own party, the Heart Food Festival, which started on Septem-
ber 24 and will continue until October 9, will be no exception. It is a celebration of food and the joys of eating, but with an emphasis on health. The festival aims to show people that healthy eating does not mean boring food. Many of the foods which the Heart Foundation promotes are already favourites with New Zealanders. It is just a matter of trimming a little
fat, using a little less salt and sugar and learning to eat in moderation. The Heart Foundation’s cookbook, “Fine Food For The Heart,” contains recipes which follow the nutrition guidelines for New Zealand while providing light, fresh and interesting dishes which even the most hardened of fatty foods lovers would find difficult to resist. There will be displays
and activities at Sydenham and Linwood Malls during the festival, as well as a fun run and walk, which will take place this Sunday. Also on the programme are supermarket tours which teach how to shop effectively and within a budget and how to read and translate food labels. They provide an opportunity to find out more about the products involved in the Heart Food Festival.
