Hockey executive director named

Jim Lonergan has been appointed the first executive director of the proposed New Zealand Hockey Federation. Professionalism and sport have become closely linked and the federation is eager to propel New Zealand back into the international limelight with a refined professional approach. Mr Lonergan has recently completed 20 years of service with the James Hardie Impey group of companies in senior marketing and management positions and his skills in this area are in strong demand. The federation’s offices will be based in Auckland and are expected to be established in November. The men’s and women’s associations, which have been entirely separate to date, will join forces on November 12 as one body and elect a management board for the federation. These changes signal a new era for New Zealand hockey as the federation will appoint additional staff including a development officer, who will be responsible for coaching, umpiring and youth development.
