N.Z. free to quit scheme
By OLIVER RIDDELL in Parliament New Zealand is completely free to withdraw from the Anzac frigate programme, according to the Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard. He was replying to questions by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr McKinnon, on the programme. Mr McKinnon asked if New Zealand was free to withdraw completely and
if the option of buying smaller and cheaper vessels from countries other than Australia was still to be considered. Mr Tizard said New Zealand could withdraw until and if a decision to buy was taken. Mr McKinnon’s questions were prompted by the visit to New Zealand earlier this week of the Ausralian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans.
