Sailors to visit camp site
PA Wellington A party of Japanese sailors will visit the site of the Featherston World War II prisoner-of-war camp on Saturday for a wreath-laying ceremony and service. The event is part of this week’s visit to Wellington by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force Training Squadron. During the service the
sailors will remember the 49 Japanese POWs who died in 1943 during a riot at the camp. The killings took place after prisoners refused an order to work. Several hundred men rioted and were fired on by guards. Three Japanese ships — JDS Katori, JDS Setoyuki, and JDS Shimayuki — will be in Wellington for the visit, which
runs from Thursday to Monday. The crews will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in Buckle Street. An open ship for members of the Japanese community and for New Zealand defence officials, sea cadets and sea scouts is planned, as well as opportunities for the public to go aboard.
