Surgery payment plans denied

The Government has no plans to introduce charges for surgery in public hospitals, the Minister of Health, Mr Caygill, said yesterday. Mr Caygill was responding to comments made by the member of Parliament for Ashburton, Mrs Jenny Shipley,

that “patients will have to pay for minor surgery in hospitals withing five years.” Mr Caygill said that although there had been a reference to payment for surgery and other services in the Gibbs task force report the Government had no intention of introducing a charge.
