Meal service debt fear

A new system of payments for Meals on Wheels would result in more bad debts, said the medical superintendent of community health care services, Dr John Holmes, yesterday. The Red Cross volunteers who delivered the meals no longer wanted to collect the money, Dr Holmes told the health services committee.

Previously, the $2 for the meal had been collected by the volunteers once a fortnight, he said. “We have had to put in quite a sophisticated billing system which is going to cost us money. When the Red Cross collected the money, it cost us nothing and we had almost no bad debts.” Sending out bills once a

month would cost money for postage and would result in more bad debts because no-one was personally requesting the money, he said. The new billing system would come into effect on October 1, said Dr Holmes. Bad debts would be monitored and action taken as the situation required, he said.
