Villa Maria scores netball hat-trick
When it comes to schools’ netball, Villa Maria College takes a lot of beating. Rival secondary schools found that out the hard way in Invercargill when Villa Maria won the South Island title for the third consecutive year. Three Christchurch schools were among the four semi-finalists, with Rang! Ruru Girls’ School beating St Margaret’s College, 26-20, after leading 15-12 at halftime. Villa Maria advanced
from the other side of the draw with a 27-22 victory over Gore High School (halftime, 12-10.) In .the final Villa Maria held off a fiery challenge from Rangi Ruru. The winner led through the match, reaching half-time 19-12 ahead and maintaining the pressure to finish 31-22 ahead. Villa’s shooters, Ann Culhane and Rochelle Krammer, were accurate under pressure and com-
bined well with the circle feeders, Kate Brownlee and Juliette Glubb. Rangi’s usually assertive play lost its rhythm in the face of tight marking by Katrina Cowan and Larissa Glubb. Earlier, Villa Maria beat Blue Mountain College, 3317, after winning its section of the A grade event. Roxburgh Area School won the B grade title with a 24-23 success against St Kevvins College (Oamaru) in the final.
