A complete service

The New Zealand Federation of Architectural Draughtsmen Inc. (N.Z.F.A.D.) is a nationwide organisation founded in 1966 to bring together self-employed architectural designers to promote their profession. They can be engaged in all facets of architectural design for new residential, commercial and industrial projects including renovations, additions and interiors. All members are selfemployed and meet the professional standards of design, working drawing documentation and office and project management established by the N.Z.F.A.D.’s constitution and code of ethics.

Development and promotion of the profession is co-ordinated through the eight regional branches in New Zealand that enable members to participate in their fed : eration and keep them informed of events and changes.

Members offer a complete project service from inception to completion and will liaise and coordinate with other professional consultants — surveyors, structural and mechanical engineers, quantity surveyors or project managers.

The extent of services required varies according to project requirements and may include some or all of the following — advice about site selection before purchase to ensure that the site measures up to expectations. This may include preliminary design concept sketches and soil testing to check site stability. They may prepare a brief to set out requirements, budget, type of building contract, pre-

paration of design sketch plans, working drawings and specifications, calling tender prices for the contract and letting of the contract. The N.Z.F.A.D. can also be involved in project observation and progress payment approvals, preparation of interior design concepts for flooring, surface colours and textures, lighting, furniture and soft furnishings and site landscaping. The designer will discuss these services and will advise clients about charges for the services. These will depend on the project and the architectural designer employed. When selecting an architectural designer, clients should consider his design style and personality as they will be working closely with him through the project. Clients must have confidence in the designer. A successful project comes about through a good working relationship between designer, client and building contractor.

The N.Z.F.A.D.’s exhibit stand at the Canterbury Building Centre displays projects completed by members and will help clients choose an architectural designer. A membership list is displayed and information brochures can be' obtained from reception. Members will discuss your proposed project. A phone call may be sufficient but the best information will come from a meeting to discuss the project and costs and gain a proper understanding of the services available. Proper planning and organisation for the project right at the start will ensure clients get what they want.
