Awards for excellence

Design awards have become an integral part of the New Zealand Federation of Architectural Draughtsmen conferences since they were introduced in 1982. In 1986 Monier, a sponsor of the federation for many years, offered to sponsor the design awards and to transport the display around the country to be exhibited at all major centres. The awards thus became known as the Monier New Zealand Federation of Architectural Draughtsmen architectural design awards. The South Island

dominated the awards at last year’s conference held in Auckland. Entries from federation members represented residential, commercial and industrial projects. The Monier N.Z.F.A.D. architectural design award was won by David Brocherie of the Christchurch firm of Brocherie and Cumberpatch Design Ltd for the refurbishment of the Symon and Lowther Menswear store.

David Brocherie’s entry showed a real understanding of what he was creating through his design skills, according to the chairman of the judging

panel, Mr Graeme Robertson, a senior lecturer at the Auckland University School of Architecture. Two merit awards were presented, one to lan Cumberpatch for the Craigie residence in Geraldine, the other to Mr Noel Tapp of Queenstown for two townhouses. Displays of these awards and other local work can be viewed at the following venues: The Canterbury Building Centre, Thursday — Saturday, September 15 - 24.

Linwood City, Monday, September 26 — Satur-

day, October 1. The Canterbury Centre, Monday — Saturday, October 3 — 8. Northlands Mall, Monday — Saturday, September 10 — 15. John Edmonds, Manchester Street, Monday — Saturday, October 17 —- 22. The public is invited to come to the Building Centre’s open day this Saturday (September 17). N.Z.F.A.D. members will be there to advise and answer any questions about the services available that the federation can offer.
