Adata still plans to pay wages

Adata Software still plans to pay wages owed to workers laid off from its Exsys project. A spokesman for the Christchurch company confirmed this yesterday when asked to comment on a former employee's criticism of an advertisement for staff in "The Press” on Saturday. The employee said it was

wrong for Adata to advertise for new staff when it still owed wages to staff laid off. Adata, headed by Mr Rodger Nixon, has developed a software product called Exsys over the last few years. As many as 30 researchers have been employed on the project. Late in June their employment was ended. Most are

still owed two months pay. About seven persons have continued to work at the centre. Mr Nixon was not available last evening but a spokesman for Adata said those who lost their jobs had been employed by Exsys, an American-based company to which Adata had leased the Exsys product.

Adata. which now plans to develop the product itself, did not have any legal obligation to pay the owed wages, the spokesman said. However, it did have a moral obligation to pay them. The wages would be paid as the cash flow allowed, the spokesman said.
