The Champion of Champion triples, held at the C.1.8.A. hall, Kearneys Road, on Saturday, was won by the Burwood team of Susan Rands (skip). May Henry (third) and Wayne Harpur (lead). The Avonhead team, of T. Clark (skip), T. Kircher (third) and J. Ransley (lead) lost a very close match, 9-8, in the final. Results:

FENCING Young Canterbury fencers achieved a string of seconds in the national secondary schools championships in Onehunga last week-end. Richard Bowles (Christ’s College) and Karita Avia (Linwood H.S.) were second in the boys’ and girls’ foil events, respectively, and both Canterbury boys’ and girls’ teams were second in their
foil contests. The individual foil titles were won by Reid Quinlan (Auckland) and Mynetta Erueti (Wellington), and Wellington won both teams’ events.
Other Canterbury competitors to qualify for the sixperson, round robin finals were Jenny Allen (Avonside G.H.S.) and Clare Abaffy (Linwood H.S.) in the girls’ foil, and Andrew Robb and Aaron Kitto (both Christchurch 8.H.5.) in the boys’ epee and and sabre respectively. Other members in the Canterbury team were: Julian Crosse, Craig Caddie (Linwood H.S.), Sara Hamilton, Kathy Potter, Sarah Jones (Avonside G.H.S.), Jonathan Thompson, Susan Humphries (Nayland College), Stephen Phipps (Burnside H.S.), Sara O’Keefe (Marian College). Meanwhile, at Newlands College, Wellington, Steve Martin (Auckland) and Anne Cushnie (Wellington) won the men’s and women’s sections of the McCrae Foil tourament.
Martin retained his foil title by making a spirited comeback against Steven Clarke sen. (Christchurch) to win 11-9, after being down by nine hits to six. Clarke finished third, behind Martin and Gavin McLean (Wellington), with Robert Bain - (Christchurch) seventh. Cushnie won the women’s title from Waimaria Erueti (Wellington) and Mary-Anne Mulcare (Auckland).
