Day surgery increasing
PA Wellington About 20 per cent of operations at Wellington Hospital Board hospitals are now being done as day cases, statistics show. Figures presented to the board’s house committee show that in the last three months, 580 day operations were done at Wellington Hospital, 282 at Hutt Hospital and 61 at Kenepuru Hospital. Day operations were 21 per cent of the total at Wellington, 19 per cent of ttjose at Hutt and 2,3 per
cent of those at Kenepuru. The board’s chief medical officer, Ms Helen Bichan, said one advantage of day surgery was that it reduced the need for expensive hospital care after surgery.
“There is a lot of interest in anything that will enable us to put through extra patients without increasing costs associated with the stay overnight, so it is a trend that we are encouraging,” she said. It also had advantages for patients who did not like staying in hospital.
