Footwear firm axes 26 jobs

PA Nelson Twenty-six people have lost jobs at the Nelson factory of Bata N.Z., Ltd. The redundancies affect 23 women and three men, most employed full-time to sew. Low labour costs overseas and the relaxation of import restrictions have been given as reasons

for staff cuts. Bata has a factory in Nelson and another in Wainuiomata, which is not affected by the cuts, the general manager, Mr Gerry Thompson, said in Wellington yesterday. He said Bata had been forced to reduce production costs to compete with imported footwear. Some jobs had been retained at

the Nelson factory to continue production of slippers. The redundancies take effect from October 7. The Footwear Workers Union delegate in Nelson, Mrs Julie Anderson, said yesterday the redundancies had left the mainly female workforce “scared." The. workers were not likely to find similar work in the region.
