Seminars for women

This year eight financial planning seminars specially designed for women have been held in Christchurch and more will be held later in the year. The seminars are run jointly by Jill Wyld from the Broadbase Consulting Group in Christchurch and Sheryl Nicholls, who operates her own financial planning consultancy business in Dunedin.

Sheryl has been involved in financial planning for seven years and is one of the first New Zealand women to set up financial planning seminars. She believes that women .need to be able to make decisions about money and that if they can make these decisions, they can then make other decisions about the direction of their lives.

“Women have always been very good at budget shopping, but become frightened when confronted with such things as financial markets.

“So far, the seminars have been very popular. Women seem to learn

As with any other financial consultant, Sheryl has had to learn by experience. She has, however, followed overseas trends and recently completed a section of a diploma in financial planning offered by Massey University.

As a very successful business woman, she says she is a feminist to the extent that she believes in supporting women and doing whatever she can for women.

“Above all, women need to save money

for themselves,” she says. Recently she was nominated by the Dunedin Professional Women’s Club for the “More” magazine title of Business Woman of the Year. There are five industry sectors and the winners from these will be in the running for the over-all title. The award winners will be announced in Auckland on September 23. Sheryl says that being nominated in the financial services sector is a little flattering, but she does not want to be seen as a “role model.”
