Canterbury badminton team fourth

The Canterbury under-18 A badminton team, representing the South Island in the New Zealand teams’ final in Auckland, could only record its usual fourth placing. The Canterbury players, especially the boys, lifted their game against the stronger, highly competitive North Islanders, and most individual contests were closer than the scores indicated. North Shore, the eventual champion, was the only team to completely dominate Canterbury, winning 16-0, with games won quite decisively. The second-placed Wellington dropped four games to Canterbury, as did the third team, Auckland. Scott Ronald won his singles in both those matches, while Mark Brownlie and Nicky Baird were twice successful as a mixed doubles combination. The teams in playihg order were:— Boys: Mark Floris, Brownlie, Ronald, Kerry Williams, Sean Taylor. Girls: Baird, Charmaine Hoogeveen, Leiza Flewellen, Jennifer Skerton, Karina Burton. Meanwhile two Canterbury under-14 players were successful in the South Canterbury age championships in Timaru. Nicky-Flewellen won the under-14 girls’ singles final and the under-16 girls’ singles plate, and Marc Roberts won the under-14 boys’ singles plate.
