Fire in pit

A fire at Ashby’s pit in Johns Road flared again yesterday. Three fire engines were called to the scene about 8.40 a.m.

The engines finally returned to base at 6.20 p.m. yesterday after a day damping down three separate fires in rubbish at the pit.

A front-end loader and two excavators also helped put out the smouldering demolition materials, old trees and rubbish.

Fire engines were at the site until 3 a.m. on Tuesday but were called out again yesterday morning. A spokesman for the Fire Service said the fire had been difficult to control because of the extent of the seat of the fire underground.
