Palmer’s letter ‘a threat’

Local government reform is at risk of bearing the fingerprints of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, says the Opposition spokesman on local government, Mr Graeme Lee.

Mr Palmer had threatened the Christchurch Drainage Board and could do the same with other local bodies, said Mr Lee, member of Parliament for Coromandel.

He was referring to a letter received by the Drainage Board on Tuesday in which Mr Palmer questioned the board’s stance on floodmanagement proposals for the Heathcote River.

Mr Palmer ended his letter with a reminder that he was the chairman of the Cabinet committee on local government reform.

This was undoubtedly a threat, and was “wholly unnecessary,” said Mr Lee. Mr Palmer was overriding the role of the Local Government Commission to make its own decisions, he said. “It concerns' me that we might have to expect the Minister’s fingerprints over the final restructuring of local government,” said Mr Lee.

That would be wrong, he said.
