Fees for all huts

Trampers and mountaineers in Canterbury will be charged for staying in Conservation Department huts this summer. The charge for huts with more than six bunks will be $5 for adults and $2 for children. For huts with six bunks or less, it will be $3 and $1 respectively. The charges were essential if the department was to gather enough revenue to cover maintenance costs, said the North Canterbury district conservator, Mr Ray Forsythe.

Wardens would check as much as they could that people paid their fees, but otherwise an honesty system would be used. The introduction of charges for all huts has been criticised by various organisations, such as the Deerstalkers’ Association and ski-ing and tramping clubs.

They argue, among other things, that charges might discourage trampers from signing hut log books, thus hampering search and rescue operations.

But Mr Forsythe said people would just have to choose between honesty and their own safety.
