Pilot killed in crash
A man was killed when his helicopter crashed and burst into flames in a riverbed at Otekaieke yesterday.
He was Murray McMillan, aged 33, of Weston, near Oamaru. Children at the Otekaieke School watched from their playground as the helicopter stalled and crashed 100 m away. The school’s principal, Mr Mark Nicolls, said the helicopter was flying low as it approached the school.
“The children said they saw the rotor stop and the helicopter drop straight down. It exploded when it hit the bank .of the river,” he said.
