U.S. CPI increases
NZPA-Reuter Washington The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the major measure of United States inflation, rose 0.4 per cent in July, providing further evidence that interest rates could continue to increase.
The rate of increase in the CPI, which followed 0.3 per cent advances in the two previous months, was in line
with most forecasts. The upturn, while expected, could add to a growing belief by economists that the United States economy, in its sixth consecutive year of expansion, may be becoming overheated.
Earlier this month, the Federal Reserve Board increased the key discount rate to 6.5 per cent
