Banking stocks boost Aust.

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian stocks closed firmer in fairly thin trade as major bank stocks and some blue chip industrials created a firm undertone for the market yesterday. Brokers said they were surprised the market had firmed in the afternoon, after its slow and directionless §tart.

They said that the day’s trading had been nervous and thin, but a good performance from the industrial sector had lifted the general tone of the fnarket. At the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index Was 3.4 points higher at 1632.9, after reaching a low of 1626.3. The all industrials index was up 14.5 at 2633.2. The all resources lost 4.1 points to 877.8 and the gold marker was 14.6 down at 1878.3. National turnover was 86.12 M shares worth sAustl4o.94M ($NZ178.99M). Falls slightly outpaced rises. Leading bank stocks led the afternoon’s firmer tone. Westpac added 16c to 600, National Australia 12c to 652, and the ANZ 8c to 508.

Mayne Nickless added 40c to 700 after its strong profit report and announcement of a bonus issue. Amcor, a 50 per cent shareholder in Mayne Nickless, saw its stock rise 14c to 5.14. Brewers Elders IXL and S. A. Brewing Holdings each added 3c cents to 345 and 218 on news of a cut in beer excise.

News Corp rose 15c to 1060 on expectations of a good profit report. Bond Media added 2c to 74.
