Pictures in parks
Sir, —A shameful, greedy, pathetic, ludicrous gardens fiasco or a brilliantly conceived concept? I see the City Council’s decision as a calculated diversionary tactic to distract Cantabrians from the pain of redundancy. But whether a blunder or a success, I note a gratuitous benefit; it will show the rest of New Zealand that, even in adversity, Cantabrians have a sense of humour. This is manifested in the eight letters to the Editor (August 16). The humour evinced in these letters, especially those by Ralph Unger and W. A. Sutton, reminds me of the humour that emanated from London during the darkest days of the Battle of Britain. While equating the humour, I admit that the circumstances are different. Battle of Britain Londoners had their backs to the wall and their faces to the sky. Christchurch ratepayers want to have their backs to the flowers and their faces to the camera.— Yours, etc.,
J. K. MOIR. August 23, 1988.
