Call for halt to all Fiji aid
PA Wellington The Coalition for Democracy in Fiji on Monday called on the Government to suspend all development aid to Fiji. The coalition’s spokesman, Mr Jone Dakuvula, said aid should be suspended until the Internal Security Decree No. 32
issued by Brigadier Rabuka in June was revoked and a new constitution negotiated with Dr Timoti Bavadra’s Labour Party. The decree gave security forces wide-ranging powers of arrest and imprisonment. Mr Dakuvula said examples were that any person found armed without
lawful excuse could be imprisoned for up to 25 years. Security • forces could search any person or building without a warrant, or could kill in areas declared , “dangerous” without having to answer for their actions. Also all appointments to higher education posts had to be approved.
