Auckland company to bid for casino
PA Auckland An Auckland consortium yesterday declared its interest in building and running a licensed casino. The company, Community Casinos, Ltd, is a joint venture set up by the Portage Licensing Trust and the Avondale Jockey Club. It intends to use part of the Jockey Club’s grounds to build a multilevel complex. The chairman of Community Casinos, Ltd, Mr Terry Cummins, said the two groups came together soon after the Minister of Tourism, Mr Goff, in June announced the setting up of a public committee of inquiry to consider the implications of casinos operating in New Zealand. “We believe we have the right ingredients to be one of the successful applicants,” he said yesterday in a statement. “We have the facility out here in Avondale and the people to make it work.” He said he believed the joint venture bid would receive the support of most Aucklanders.
