Paeroa loses Flying Luskin in the second leg

Special correspondent Auckland The field for the second leg of the T.A.B. double at Paeroa today had a loss yesterday with the scratching of Flying Luskin, and for a while at Takanini yesterday morning looked likely to suffer another.

Flying Luskin, one of two horses paid-up for in the Penfolds Wine Handicap by the New Plymouth trainers, John Wheeler and lan Adams (the other is Red Comet), is being reserved for Ellerslie on Saturday. Pont Neuf is the Takanini horse in the field which, on pulling up from his pacework yesterday morning, looked a decidedly doubtful runner. Pont Neuf, a winner in two of his last four starts, came back favouring his near hind foot. His trainer, Kevin Hughes, feared the worse but reported later an 80 per cent or better chance the horse would be able to run. It seemed all that worried Pont Neuf was a nail a bit close in the shoeing. With Red Comet and Pont Neuf starters and Regal City in the field as well, Paeroa has cause to be pleased with the qual-

ity of its second-leg field and thoroughly satisfied with the first leg, the Gordons Gin Handicap. Billet Doux, Escalation, and Tour Blade are the first three in the weights for the Gordons Gin Handicap, a class 22100 m and each is in excellent form. Escalation, a Takanini four-year-old, will be going for his third win in a row, Billet Doux, from Pukekohe, for his second on end and Tour Blade a fourth win from five successive starts. Billet Doux took, a 2100 m at Matamata last time, on August 12, Escalation a 2000 m at Ellerslie the next day and Tour Blade 1900 m at Rotorua the previous week. All looked good. Tour Blade has an imposing record — five times first and five times second in 12 starts. Escalation, after seeming quite ordinary until well into the winter, has become, suddenly,

one of the real up-and-comers of his district. Billet Doux and Escalation have shown a mastery of very heavy footing. Tour Blade has not had quite the same experience of really deep ground but the track was certainly very soft when he had his latest win. Red Comet, a five-year-old gelding by Calshot Light, finished last, season with four wins on end, the latest a class 21600 m at Hawera on June 22. This will be . his first race since then. There could be, then, some question of his readiness though he evidently shaped up encouragingly when second in a barrier trial on his home track last week. Pont Neuf was successful two starts back at Ruakaka on July 29 and, in the meantime, ran on for a sixth placing over 1200 m at Matamata. His Ruakaka race was 1400 m and that is the distance he needs to go this time.
