NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian stock prices moved sharply lower in late trading in increased nervous; ness ahead of last night’s Federal Budget. Brokers said the sharemarket closed near the day’s lows, with losses posted in most major sectors in thin, featureless trade. They said the market lacked buyers and sentiment was also dented by a sharp downturn ■ on the Nikkei, which fell about 170 points. By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was 14.9 points down at 1629.9, barely above the day’s low of 1629.8. The all industrials index dropped 21.3 points to 2618.8, the all resources fell 9.9 to 882.4, while the gold marker plunged 31.5 points to 1893.3. National turnover was a low 79.91 M shares worth

sAustl4o.B4M as falls outpaced rises by about three to two. The industrial sector bore the brunt of selling pressure with blue chips contributing to the decline. Market leader BHP fell 10c to 840 and News Corp dropped 25 to 1040. Profit-taking after last week's strong rises also took its toll on baiiks and special situation stocks. Among the banks, Westpac and National Australia dropped 8c each to 584 and 642, and the ANZ lost 6 to 500. Elsewhere, Coles Myer declined 15c to 1100, ICI lost 20 to 690, BTR Nylex 14 to 886 and Elders IXL 5c to 342. Insurance group FAI went against the trend, adding 10c to 440.
