Bringing the sparkle to firework shows
A man who has been playing with fireworks since he was very young, is bringing the atmosphere of the Brisbane Expo fireworks to Christchurch.
Mr Syd Howard, director of the Expo fireworks display, was in Christchurch recently. He will bring one of the Expo shows to Queen Elizabeth II Park on Halloween. Fireworks for Mr How-
ard have been a family business, his grandfather having begun to make fireworks in the 19205. Mr Howard became involved at a very young age. “I guess I was 10 or 11 when I organised the fireworks for a school fete,” he said. While the appeal of fireworks has not changed over the years, the present high-tech age means
that big fireworks displays are programmed by computer, and set off electronically. At Expo, more than $6OOO worth of fireworks are set off every night on river barges to the acommpaniment of music. Some of the fireworks are imported and others are made by Mr Howard’s Australian factory.
