Frigate decision delayed
The delayed decision on the refit of H.M.N.Z.S. Southland means that the Lyttelton member of Parliament, Dr Peter Simpson, will be out of the country when the contract is awarded.
Dr Simpson, a key supporter of the refit being done in Lyttelton, leaves today on a threeweek visit to China.
Suggestions last week that the Cabinet would not resolve the refit issue yesterday proved correct, and a decision will not now be announced until next Monday at the earliest. The issue is troublesome for the Government — the more so if reports that British tenders for the job strongly undercut New Zealand estimates are corIf* the multi-million dollar contract goes to Britain, the Government’s commitment to regional development at a time of high unemployment will be questioned — not least at the Labour Party’s annual conference in a fortnight.
Dr Simpson will accompany the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr Bassett, on the trip, whose focus is on cultural links including how China and Japan could contribute to New Zealand’s 1990 Commemoration.
