In brief
Motor-cyclists injured Two motor-cyclists suffered moderate to serious injuries in separate accidents in Christchurch on Saturday. Mr Eden Taka, aged 25, of Tokoroa, suffered injuries to the lower left leg when in a collision with a car at the intersection of Carmen Road and Main South Road, Hornby, about 1.30 a.m. His machine then hit a power pole. Mr Taka was resting comfortably in Christchurch Hospital yesterday. A man suffered head injuries when his machine hit a power pole in Emmett Street, Shirley, about 6 p.m. His name and condition were not available from Christchurch Hospital last evening. Stolen car stripped A four-wheel-drive Toyota Hi Lux stolen a month ago was found stripped in a plantation near Hororata yesterday. Constable Phillip Lynch, of Darfield, said the vehicle, owned by Cockram Motors, appeared to have been in the plantation alongside the Dunsandel Road for several days. The wheels, back seat and battery were missing and the remaining upholstery slashed with a knife. The dashboard had been smashed. Girl struck by car A girl, aged six, remained seriously ill in the Christchurch Hospital intensive-care unit last eveninga after being struck by a car in Colombo Street early on Friday evening. Sharon Hales suffered head, chest and arm injuries in the accident, about 6 p.m. Prisoner stabbed A Paparua Prison inmate was stabbed in the stomach and back in the shower block about 5.30 p.m. on Saturday. The inmate, aged 20, was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital for observation. He returned to the prison yesterday morning. His injuries were not serious. Detectives questioned another inmate, also aged 20, yesterday morning. He will appear in the District Court tomorrow charged with wounding with intent to injure. A search of the prison uncovered a home-made knife. Robbery lead The police say they are following strong leads in the hunt for a knife-wielding robber who held up the Wainoni branch of New Zealand Post on Friday. He fled with between $5OO and $6OO after leaping the counter and grabbing a woman staff member in a headlock. He menaced her with the knife and inflicted two small cuts to the woman’s forearm. Fire contained Sprinklers helped contain a fire in an empty building at the Northlands Shopping Mall, on the Main North Road, yesterday afternoon. A Fire Service spokesman said the fire, reported at 3.19 p.m., activated seven heads. Up to 10 per cent of the building was burnt but the rest suffered heavy smoke damage. Four fire engines were sent to the blaze, which is not considered suspicious. Highway death A man died after being thrown from his rolling car into the path of other traffic while travelling towards Outram, south of Dunedin, on Friday night. He was David Stanous Daniell, aged 22, salesman of Outram. Dunedin police said Mr Daniell’s car failed to take a right-hand bend on State highway 87. The car rolled over throwing him into the path of a following car.— PA. Air fare increase Air fares on the sectors between Rotorua, Auckland and the Bay of Islands, on services flown by Mount Cook Airline will increase 12 per cent today, Mr Peter Clark, the group’s marketing manager, said on Friday. Increased costs since the last increase in May, 1987, and the effect of increased airways dues on short-sector haulage, were given as the main, cause.—PA.
