Books and toys in Bola's wake
Seventy mailbags and five truckloads of children’s books and toys have been distributed in the area of Gisborne hit by Cyclone Bola. The appeal, organised by the Save the Children Fund, has supplied material to all the area’s flooded schools, kindergartens, playcentres and kohanga reos. Waerengaokuri Playcentre was demolished during the cyclone when a slip formed at the bottom of the valley, creating a lake. The playcentre’s possessions ended up several metres underwater. They have now been replaced. A Gisborne Save the
Children Fund spokeswoman, Mrs Lee Newman, said the response to the appeal had been overwhelming. The playcentre was just one example among hundreds where gifts of books and toys had brightened the lives of the children.
“This toy appeal has helped not only the children of the East Coast but their parents as well. It has taken a bit of pressure off them at a time when they are under a lot of stress.”
The fund’s executive officer, Mr John Bowis, said the appeal was one of its most successful in New Zealand.
