Steele, Johnston win road-running
Dale Steele (Anglican) and Gay Johnston (Rovers) won the men’s and women's races respectively, in the annual Governors Bay-to-Lyttelton 10km road run on Saturday.
Steele started 11 min behind the front marker and finished Imin 19s clear of the secondplaced Alan Johnson (United). Gay Johnston, who started from Imin, finished 46s clear of Joanne Forbes (Sumner), who had given Johnston a 6min start.
The fastest man on the day was Greymouth’s Robert Schuddeboom, who strode to the line only 2s ahead of a clubmate, George Searle. Both had started with a pack of 11 runners from the 24min handicap. It was a minute which the back-marker, Kevin Barnes (Christchurch),
found too much on the day. Barnes could manage only seventeen-fastest time, and clearly found the task of running alone too great a handicap. The first veterans were Lloyd Whinwray (Q.E.) and Debbie Rhode (Sumner). The fastest veterans were John Graham (Rovers) and Helen Grant (Sumner). Donna Cormack (New Brighton), who started from the back mark in the women’s race, was the fastest woman. The races were held in the morning for the first time and conditions were ideal, with very little wind and cool temperatures. Results.) MEN
