Impressive Calvert outpoints rival in boxing championship
By JOHN COFFEY Dean Calvert (Bell’s gymnasium) and Greg Godkin (Timaru), who were team-mates in Rarotonga, experienced contrasting fortunes when the Canterbury amateur boxing championships were decided at the Richmond Working Men’s Club yesterday.
An impressive Calvert comfortably outpointed an old rival, Carl Bradshaw (Timaru), to win the intermediate under 63.5 kg title, but Godkin was no match for Michael Bell (Bell’s gymnasium) in the senior under 75kg final. It was Calvert’s fourth meeting with Bradshaw. He lost the first, two years ago, but yesterday was always on course for a third consecutive victory. Sharp in his ringwork, Calvert peppered his opponent with firm, straight lefts — Bradshaw’s battered nose was testimony to that — and scored frequently to the body. Bradshaw made a brave bid to restore some of the balance in the third round. Calvert, however, was too much in control and not only won the bout but also the “boxer of the tournament” award. Two wins while in Rarotonga were indicative of Godkin’s potential. The seemingly inevitable occurred yesterday, though, as he conceded reach and experience to Bell. After building up a handy points lead with his
characteristically clean punches, and varying his attacks to elude Godkin’s guard, Bell stopped his rival in the third round with a series of blows to the midriff. Norm Bedggood (Westport) completed a home and away double over Terry O’Shannessey (Olympic) in a fast and furious senior improvers’ under 75kg contest. Bedggood came out as if he was leading the charge up San Juan Hill, and O’Shannessey did well to keep with the pace all the way. Three other visiting boxers won titles. Aaron Kenny (Lawrence) showed potential in the junior under 36kg division, and Stuart Henderson and John Middleton travelled from Oamaru to beat Christchurch opponents. Middleton’s secondround win over Chris Armstrong (Barry’s) provided a sudden change of fortune for his trainer, Ave Luxton, who did not hide his annoyance when the referee (Mr John Ensor, of Timaru) called an early halt to the previous
bout between another of his charges, Richard Docherty, and Jason Burrow (Dickson’s). One of the closest decisions of the day was Perry Scarlett’s (Woolston W.M.C.) majority points success at the expense of Jason McQuillan (Barry’s). After a keenly contested opening round, Scarlett accumulated points in the second, before McQuillan staged a storming finish. Two entrants who won championships unopposed, Damien McKeowen (Richmond W.M.C.) and Glen Colquhoun (Dickson’s), managed to get in the action. McKeowen beat Richard Nicholls (Woolston W.M.C.) in a matched bout, but Colquhoun conceded weight and a points win to Henderson. Other uncontested titles went to Danny McNally (Dickson’s), Colin Adamson (Woolston W.M.C.), Nigel Noonan (Papanui), Royce Ellis (Bell’s), Allan Patton (Woolston W.M.C.), Daniel Campbell (Papanui), Fred Tavelu (Fidow’s) and Trinity Dwayne Mapu (Ashburton).
