NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher as investor demand for selected industrials spread into all sectors, dealers said. “There were some stories circulating in the market about particular stocks,” including Coles Myer, Elders IXL and Lend Lease, one said. “There’s still a lot of appetite for leading industrials,” he added. By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was up 8.6 points to 1631.3 and the all industrials gained 16.2 to 2602.4. The all resources gained 3.1 to 895.6 and the gold marker added 3.4 to 1963.6. National turnover was 134.51 million shares worth sAust224.99M and rises outnumbered falls by 26 to 23. On the industrial board, rumours that both Coles Myer and Lend Lease would announce bonus issues saw their prices soar. Coles Myer jumped 50c to 1050, and Lend Lease 45 to 1450. Elders IXL added 1c to 338. Retailers James Darrell added 23c to 518, David Jones gained 6 to 916, and Woolworths 2 to 332. In the media sector, News Corp tumbled 15c to 1045, Bond Media fell 1 to 72, and Qintex Australia shed 3 to 192. In the banks, the ANZ gained 12 to 478, the NAB 10 to 628, and Westpack 4 to 670.
