Heathcote flooding

Sir,—As a former Christchurch resident who was fortunate to live by the Heathcote River, I am appalled at suggestions for major river widening to facilitate drainage from , the upper catchment. Work of this nature will have far-reaching consequences for the delightful tree-lined surroundings which I enjoyed so much. Problems caused by occasional minor flooding of lawns and access ways are insignificant compared with the permanent damage that engineering work of the kind contemplated will bring. What makes this prospect doubly disturbing is the fact that there is an alternative scheme available to the Drainage Board that is equally effective in reducing flood damage, but is much less threatening to the environment.—Yours, etc., MARIE-ANN BILLENS. July 25, 1988.
