The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay unveils a plaque in Cathedral Square to mark the centenary of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors. Above the plaque a survey peg is held in

place before being signed by the 60 surveyors attending the institute’s centennial celebrations in Christchurch this week. The peg will be varnished and kept as a memento of the occasion. The plaque commemorates the first survey of

Christchurch completed by Edward Jollie in March, 1850. The surveyors held their branch meeting at Warners New Hotel, on the site of the original Warners Hotel where 13 surveyors met to form the branch on August 3, 1888.
