M.P. supporting asset sales law

The member of Parliament for Avon, Mr Larry Sutherland, plans to support asset sales legislation and stay within the Labour caucus unless strongly advised against this by his electorate. Mr Sutherland said yesterday that he endorsed the resolution passed by the Government caucus meeting, and was pleased to see the member for Sydenham, Mr Anderton, was still a member.

Having consulted his electorate, last week about his opposition to asset sales, Mr Sutherland voted for the empowering

legislation. Mr Anderton has said it would be difficult for him to vote with the Government, even if denied permission to abstain. Failure to vote would automatically exclude him from the caucus.

But Mr Sutherland said his electorate, while also opposed to asset sales, had indicated it wanted him to work within the caucus.

“That is the position I am hooked into at the moment,” he said. “Any deviation from that would oblige me to consult my electorate.”
