Growth in luxury firm
By PETER GREENSLADE A Christchurch quality car dealer, Phillip Mills, Ltd, js flourishing. It was bereft of a new car franchise until it eventually landed the Ferrari agency. It has now been granted the Mercedes Benz franchise by the Cable Price Corporation, which curtailed its retail motor business earlier this year. Mention Ferrari or Mercedes and you are talking more money than some better-paid executives drag from the company superannuation funds on retirement. In these hard times one could be excused for thinking that a motor business of this nature would have a difficult job keeping out of the red. No so!
At present Phillip Mills is expanding its showroom along Manchester Street to show its wares to advantage. I suppose the point is that the sort of folk who drive Ferraris and Benzes are those who regarded last year’s stock market crash as a barely discernible bump. As the chairman of BMW pointed out to us at the 7 Series launch in Munich a couple of years ago, buyers of such cars don’t go grey worrying about the stock market
There are, it seems, still enough people around to keep such firms as Phillip Mills, Ltd, and others in business. Isn’t it nice to know that it’s not all bad?
