Opportunity to walk course
The annua! “Walk the Course,” a popular feature of recent Grand National meetings at Riccarton is one of the several promotions which are part and parcel of the National carnival which opens at the Canterburry Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton tomorrow.
The course followed by the runners in the Lion Grand National Steeplechase is a distant one as far as much of the viewing public is concerned but on Sunday at 10.30 a.m. the opportunity to examine the course at close quarters should prove popular judging by the enthusiasm shown in previous years. It is especially suitable for family groups with refreshments to follow.
Reon Murtha and Rob Feilder will be the guides with several guests discussing individual fences.
The C.J.C., in association with the meeting sponsors, Lion Breweries, is offering a television set as a prize during the meeting. Course patrons may enter on race day and the draw for the prize will be made on the final day of the meeting next Saturday. Consolation prizes will be provided by the sponsors. Entry may also be made at Riccarton Mall. The club has the new Paritai Stud as sponsor for the $520,000 open handicap race next Wednesday. Paritai have also sponsored another race on the card after their stallion Lyphard’s Trick.
A further feature of National week is the annual meeting of club secretaries from all over the country who meet next Thursday and Friday. The C.J.C. will also be showing the video “Race of the Century,” a history of the W. S. Cox Plate, an hour before the first race tomorrow when intertrack betting on the Rotorua meeting will also be possible.
