Light Japanese meals on offer
By
HANS PETROVIC
The new Singen teahouse in Chancery Lane offers light Japanese meals that should readily prove acceptable to New Zealand palates.
The short list of both takeaway and eat-on-the-spot food includes Japanese curry ($5 large, $3 small), gydon — beef, vegetables and rice ($5,
$3), chyahan — Japanese fried rice ($4.50, $2.50), nikuyaga — beef potato ($5, $3), onigiri — rice balls ($1.20 each), miso soup ($1.50), Japanese green tea ($1), and tea or coffee (80c).
On our first visit, we tried the mild curry, and beef, vegetables and rice, served in a plastic container (for takeaway pur-
poses), both of them proved just sufficient for a light lunch. My friend also had some apple cake ($1.20), which was somewhat dry, and I tried the green peas and sugar jelly pudding (40c a cube), which left a lovely aftertaste. The accompanying Japanese tea was literally green and also left a beautiful flavour in the month.
On our second visit, I tried a rice ball, rolled in a thin strip of seaweed and containing a small amount of dried fish. Accompanied by a bowl of miso soup, containing some seaweed and bean curd, this was for me the most pleasant, typically Japanese snack available at the Singen. A cup of green tea provided a delightful finishing touch.
