Aust, follows Wall St up
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher, with heavyweight miners and gold stocks propelled upward by steady bullion and rising base metals prices. Brokers said investors were also encouraged by firmer performances in Wall Street and London overnight, although the Tokyo market remained flat. The local market was dominated by strong overseas interest in the resources stocks, particularly Western Mining and MIM, but there was only selected buying on the industrials board. By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was 10.1 higher at 1632.1. The gold marker jumped a strong 37.8 or 1.8 per cent to 2034.2 and the all resources . was 10 higher at 906.1. The all industrials added a modest 9.2 to 2588.4. Volumes remained fairly low, reflecting a lack of selling and general caution in the market. A total of 111.50 M shares worth sAustl67.B6M changed hands and rises exceeded falls by about seven to five. MIM dominated trading on turnover of 5.44 M shares, mostly in overseas buying. MIM rose 11c to 215. Western Mining surged 26c to 674 as 1.85 M shares traded, CRA Bank injection The Reserve Bank yesterday injected J2OM into the wholesale money market by purchasing sellbacks maturing August 1 at 16.20 per cent. Bids totalled JI9OM. Latitat wins The Latitat No. 4 offer for all the issued capital of Angora Corp N.Z., became unconditional on the acceptance date. Latitat now has 94 per cent of the capital and has urged remaining shareholders to respond to the offer. Landmark gain A property owned by Landmark Corporation was sold before an auction in Sydney for JNZ26.3M to an undisclosed private Australian investor. Landmark bought the La Salle building in June last year for JNZIS.9M. The New Zealand company’s other central business district property was expected to be auctioned in mid-August for a similar return.
