U.S. import sent home

By

FRANK DUGGAN

Brian Coleman did not get round to wearing his New Plymouth national Countrywide men’s basketball league singlet this week. The American, who was contracted to replace an injured Jacques Tuz, arrived at New Plymouth on Sunday and returned home yesterday after only two training sessions. “He wasn’t what we wanted,” said the captain, John MacDonald, yesterday. “Perhaps that is the only way to describe his departure.” Coleman’s “sacking” adds to a growing list of New Plymouth’s problems in recent weeks.

Apart from losing its last four matches in sue-

cession and dropping from second place to third in the national championship, Steve Campbell and Maurice Paurini, two leading players, have walked out because of disagreement with the American coach, Brett Fair. At the same time, MacDonald took over the captaincy from a former Canterbury player, Angelo Hill, now the sole American in the squad. New Plymouth is now looking for another American import. “We will not have one for the match against Saints, but should have a replacement for the final match against Nelson,” said MacDonald. “The team needs a centre and a centre it will be,” he said.
