Trackwork

Awapuni

Special correspondent Palmerston North Seahagen worked impressively at Awapuni yesterday morning as he completed a good final trial for the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting here tomorrow. Seahagen is in both the Winter and Carnarvon Handicaps, but it is almost certain he will contest the Carnarvon. Maurice Campbell has been engaged to ride him. He was aboard when Seahagen won the Royal Hong Kong Handicap at the winter meeting here last month. In the meantime Seahagen has raced at Trentham, failing to manage the very gluey ground there last week. However, the run has improved him.

Yesterday Seaghagen worked on the inside trial, running 600 m strongly in 395. He pulled up well and should be right in his element this week.

•Irish Boe was also impressive yesterday. He scampered over 1000 m in 1:4.2, the last 600 m, in 38.45. He took no harm from his races at Trentham and could bounce back tomorrow. He will have a change of rider, David Walsh taking the mount in the Winter Handicap. Tirana worked easily over 1200 m, running 45s for his last 600 m. He was another to find Trentham too puggy last week. But he has gone good races at Awapuni and should shine in the Winter Handicap. Fernoon and Rush n’ Front, both in top order for Levin next week, ran 800 m in 51.65, the last 600 m in 38.65. Both have thrived since winning at Hastings. Capital Lady, on the ballot list at the Manawatu meeting tomorrow, ran 800 m easily in 565, the last 600 m in 42.6 s and Sophie’s Secret was timed over 1000 m in 1:9.55, the last 600 m in 435. She might race next at Levin next week.

Keswick and Pararoa ran 1000 m in 1:10, the last 600 m in 435. A Wanganui winner, Keswick is ready for another big effort at Awapuni tomorrow.

On the plough, Charade registered 1:25s for 1200 m, the last 600 m in 41s. Pauline Marie ran the last 600 m of her work in 44.65. She could run a good race at Awapuni tomorrow.

Mr Milson and Mr Bunnythorpe, both looking in good order for spring racing, completed 600 m in 39s and Sodaflo, a good maiden chance at Awapuni tomorrow, took 40s for 600 m, handling the ground well. Diamond Raider, which should be prominent in the Winter Handicap, at the Manawatu -Hunt Club's meeting tomorrow, was going easily all the way over 1000 m in 1:9.45, the last 600 m in 39.45.

Definite Dee, in good order to resume at Awapuni tomorrow, ran from the 1000 m in 1:7.45, the last 600 m in 40.45.

Hastings

Special correspondent Hastings Onewa Lad suggested he could be a danger in the hurdle race at the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting at Awapuni tomorrow when he schooled and galloped keenly at Hasting yesterday. Fast work was done on the plough and No. 1 grass, both

tracks providing very soft footing. Onewa Lad (McGifford) led Alcazar (Legg) over three batten fences in the centre and then easily beat his partner over 800 m on the No. 1 grass in 52.45, the last 600 m in 38.65. It was particularly good work from Onewa Lad, which needs three scratchings to make the field for the Pukehou Hurdles at the Manawatu Hunt meeting tomorrow. John McGifford will ride him if he starts. Trainer, Dean Howard, said Alcazar would not be starting tomorrow after the horse’s lack-lustre work. The Palm Beach gelding was brought down in a hurdle race at Hastings on July 2 and has taken a while to recover. Capone (Gifford), preparing for the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Awapuni, ran the last 600 m of his work easily in 40.95. Matthew Woods has been booked to ride him.

Bounty Queen (Meenehan), preparing for next Wednesday’s Levin meeting, took the time honours when running the first of two 600 m sprints on the plough in 37.45. She then ran the second much slower, in 40.25.

The Long Row mare has trained on well since winning at Hastings earlier this month.

Boomer Doll (Treweek) finished ahead of her stablemate, Autumn Eve (Jones), after 600 m in 39.15, while Dollar Kingdom (Legg) rounded off his preparation for tomorrow’s hurdle race at Awapuni by running an easy 600 m in 435.

Uncle Seymour was ridden by trainer, Rose Durrant, when running a solo 800 m on the plough in 53.25, the last 600 m in 39.1. Peter Ayres rides him in the Sandy Lodge Chickens Handicap at Awapuni.

Woodville

Special correspondent Woodville

Lunar Trail looked ready to tackle Bourbon Boy and company in the Lion Red Te Awamutu Cup, at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow, when he galloped at Woodville yesterday. Fast work took place on the course proper, which was heavy with the pegs well out.

Lunar Trail galloped 1400 m in 1:41, the 1200 m in 1:25.4 and last 600 m in 42. He ran third in the Parliamentary Handicap last Saturday, adding to his second the previous year. David Peake rides him tomorrow, and he will also be riding King Aussie in the Redoubt Park Classic. King Aussie was not asked for much yesterday, running his last 600 m of 800 m in 41. The leading two-year-old, Kate’s Myth, was given her first gallop since resuming. She went with Kentucky Sunset over 600 m in 41. Kate’s Myth is being aimed at the early three-year-old fillies’ events. The Awapuni candidate, Suzy Harbour, took 1:15.3 for 1000 m, the last 600 m in 42.4. She went well in her debut anti should

show up tomorrow. Vicar’s Son, which makes his debut this week, went easily over 800 m, running the final 600 m in 42.3. Pacific Dawn, preparing for the final event at Awapuni, ran 1200 m in 1:25.8, the last 600 m in 43.3. His form has tapered off, but he is worth another chance on loose ground. The steeplechase candidate, Garabaldi, worked over a round, taking 1:30.4 for the 1200 m and 44.5 for the last 600 m. Peter McKay rides him.
